I really wanted to love this movie, as I love Anders Jensen's writing and all his directorial projects, but I felt let down by 'Wilbur'. Despite the great performances, I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. Wilbur's desperate need to end his life just didn't feel real to me, just faintly comedic. And, similarly, Harbour's illness just didn't strike me as the tragedy I felt it should. The editing seemed sloppy and the story rushed, with the effect that the narrative seemed jumpy and confusing. I couldn't help but wonder whether the film suffered from being very Danish in tone, but being delivered by a British cast. The humour seemed lost on them, just as the sadness seemed unconvincing. A pity as it seemed as if the original script was very interesting.
This film is about the life of a man who looks after his suicidal brother, after their parents passed away."Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself" has a very engaging plot. The characters are all portrayed so well that makes you care about them very much. Several scenes are particularly effective, such as the heartbreaking cries of finding Wilbur in the bathtub, or the awkward silences in the Chinese restaurant. The emotional journeys of the characters are also very interesting, as two of the main characters go through from one affective state to another as the film progresses. In addition, a person who should be positive (the nurse) has a strikingly negative view of life, while the person who is expected to be negative remains so positive and psychologically strong. "Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself" is a very interesting and engaging look at the psychological journey of a troubled family.
Lone Scherfig has to be the most blandly mediocre filmmaker working today that i can think of. Her Dogme film "Italian for Beginners" was easily the least-inspired entry in that pseudo-series (what else would I call it?) that I've seen, and this sadly fairs only slightly better, and really only because the premise has some inherent potential. The first half hour or so is actually not bad, and has some funny parts, but then it quickly loses focus and just kind of plods around for another looong hour+. Instead of fulfilling the promise of it's chosen subject matter, the film oddly chooses to practically abandon it's initial theme and instead wastes a lot of time with incredibly generic soap-opera plot contrivances. As a whole the film just seems rudderless and oddly uninspired. No sense of tone or craft. Did anyone working on the film really think the horrible sentimental music was appropriate? There are too many unnecessary minor characters each with a too-tidy arch, and a lot of pointless scenes that seem like they were added just to pad out the running time even though the movie already seems too drawn-out. Overall this movie is more just strangely flat than outright bad in almost any sense, full of an overwhelming feeling of dull underachievement.
This film was terrible. Really really bad.i just read a comment saying that you'll be enriched. if anyone ever says this about a film like this it means that you have to watch a slow boring film which is absolute drivel. Its about a Scottish guy - very unlikeable - in fact its not really about anything - its an absolute snooze. If you think of yourself as a film critic you could analyze it and say oh yes its wonderful but this film was terrible. Its just pointless, not about anything - just some boring mean Scottish guy who attempts to kill himself. Great! I mean watch a good film not some arty crap. And - enriched! I mean i cant remember much of this film because i saw it a while ago and its totally unmemorable but i think he meets a girl and decides to put off killing himself for a bit.i don't know about you but that didn't make me jump up and say OK I'm gonna grab life by the balls , what an inspiring film! its just a boring load of crap. absolute drivel.1 out of 10.
