Sexual being Vera Barrie (Neve Campbell) is hired by African studies Professor Hassan Al-Ibrahim Ben Rabinowitz (James Toback) as his assistant. Hustler Ford Welles (Frederick Weller) is working for wealthy Italian Count Tommaso Lupo (Dominic Chianese). He convinces sex partner Vera to spend time with the count for $100k.I remember the main selling point for this was Neve getting naked. With the recent revelations about James Toback, it's impossible to separate the man from his work. Luckily, his work here isn't good and I'm not conflicted about crapping on this. I only feel bad for Neve Campbell. She was obviously trying to do an art indie as she searched for her place in Hollywood. The other notable is a cameo from pre-tattoo Mike Tyson. It may be one of his last appearance before his tattoo. All the cameo starting with Toback himself are disconnected. They make this guerrilla indie fractured like a student film. The central premise holds some problems mainly with the money. Surely, Vera would want a 50/50 split before the meeting. After getting paid, she could try to buy him off. The conflict could still happen after he finds out the secret but in a different way. The money part lacks credibility. Sadly, Neve's nudity is all that's left. Through it all, she somehow maintains her dignity which is far more than can be hoped for. Toback probably spent more time lining up cameo rather than writing a compelling script. Toback is unable to advance beyond his sad experience.
Book-ended by Neve Campbell's shower scene. Inbetween there is nothing of value. I rented it years and years ago for a pittance, turned out it was a big waste, the movie has those terrible- sounding people starting it off, they drone on and on and on, ad nauseum, I couldn't believe what was going on. I had not seen PARTY OF FIVE back then, I only knew Neve from THE CRAFT. But back in the Nineties, Neve was always touted as, like, wow, she's gonna be her generation's big star one day, and I was, like, she's in this...? this...? this... thing?I loathed it!I've since seen Neve Campbell in the entire run of PARTY OF FIVE and she is only good in the First Season thereof. WILD THINGS, she was utterly miscast, to say the least. THE COMPANY, useless junk. But this movie, this WHEN WILL I BE LOVED?, I will forever heap scorn on it. Imagine if you chose to go to a theater and paid lotsa bucks for the ticket, and you dressed up, and you sat there, and those grating droning endlessly-whining voices started assailing your ears.Look, I'm not gonna pretend. It's a bad memory and the flick is forgotten in my mind, but I felt like a fool when I rented it almost a decade ago. That I'll never forget. I warned myself to be more careful next time. It's such incidents that created this guy that to this day does superficial research trawling Wikipedia and IMDb (avoiding story-lines, mainly focusing on street cred) before taking on an unknown. For this movie made me see that really loathsome junk could come flying at ya unexpectedly. Don't think that because it appears to be a genuine production in a well-presented package and has a respected beloved actress is in it...The shower scene isn't even worth repeating.Let me tell you, Neve Campbell was the Queen of overrated starlets. Even The Raven fell for the hype during the Nineties. Hell, she was beautiful on the cover of "Seventeen" and I totally believed their predictions. Ah, well. . But this movie, well, you don't have to believe me, but it's like, if you slip it into your DVD player, this movie will pop onto your screen and stick its tongue out at you. And NOT in a comical way.You'll seethe "I want my money back!"Avoid it like a trip to the dentist.{and, really, this is one of the most useful reviews I have ever written}
From description I was reading on the sleeve of DVD edition of "When Will I Be Loved" it sounded like one could expect thriller with hot scenes of Neve Campbell but what you basically get is pseudo-psychological drama. Like I mentioned, the premise of narcissistic girl who controls and deceives men sounds intriguing, but it is eventually lost in (too) long shots, over forced dialogs and some pretty bad camera and sound work. Only thing worth seeing in this movie is Neve Campbell that only rarely gets a chance in some scenes to show a hint of her talent as actress. Not her fault though, script was poorly written and even more poorly executed, something that was thought of a indie experiment and filmed in 11 days turned out to be failure. You won't find anything thrilling or enjoyable in this movie, and even though it lasts pretty short, you will feel your boredom lasts forever watching it. Really - one to avoid.
*****SPOILERS***** "The ending of the movie where it freezes when Vera(Neve) looks at herself in the mirror FREAKS ME OUT TO THIS DAY." (No, its not the same image you see on the Poster art.) Well, I will start off by saying that I liked this movie. Why? most people would talk about this movie and say: "why would these characters do these things" or "its random sequence garbage." People who say these things don't understand that this is a movie and movies are fictional......Just pop in the DVD and enjoy the ride, dammit.Well, the dialog between Vera(Neve) and the Count(Chianese) is really smart and dramatic, and leads to the sex scene Very well. Ford's(Weller) dialog throughout the movie is unbelievably funny and true(what he would do for money or revenge). The ending of the movie where it freezes when Vera looks at herself in the mirror FREAKS ME OUT TO THIS MINUTE.OK fine, this movie isn't perfect, the music often instantly cuts between rap songs to classical music, and it gets annoying. The events in the movie may seem messy.I mean, if you subscribe to netflix or something BY ALL MEANS RENT THIS MOVIE, you have nothing really to lose.Did I mention there are some good sex scenes in here too? 4 Stars ****
