The lovely Laura, on a modelling job in South Africa, is kidnapped by a gang who carry her off into the jungle from where they demand a huge ransom. Two men set off in a helicopter to rescue her, little knowing what horrors Laura is enduring in the meantime in the savage clutches of a primitive and bloodthristy world. Laura's rescuers not only have to face the cruel violence of her captors - but also the horrifying lust for blood of a primitive and cruel god.

Directed by exploitation hack Jesus Franco (or Jess if you are that way inclined), Devil Hunter is clearly a film that producers wanted made, jumping on the bandwagon of cannibal films after the success of Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust (1980). But this offering has no social or political points to make like Deodato's "classic" of the sub-genre. What Franco's cannibal film offers is a regular specific of the director. The films story (if we can call it that), is about a model and actress (Ursula Fellner) who is kidnapped and taken into the forests where she is tied to a tree, awaiting for the ransom to turn up. However, on this island, there is a strange, cannibal creature (a naked black guy with bloodied ping-pong balls for eyes that are stuck to the face using Play- Doh), roaming the forests eating women that have been offered by the tribal village. The local tribe seem to worship the cannibal - they have a totem pole that seems to represent it. Basically, the entire film consists of the blonde model captured and recaptured, and generally writhing about the ground naked, and usually being touched by naked tribal women. Devil Hunter is a serious bore. The entire experience makes no sense. It is simply a series of sequences involving pretty naked women.Of course, if you are aware of Franco's main output (i.e. lesbian vampires etc - he also made many hard-core porn movies), and his lack of practice for coherent narrative, then you will know what to expect. There are many fans of his often camp work. His lesbian vampire films that he made in France are pretty well-known, and it would not be uncommon to find one shown on TV (Vampiros Lesbos (1970) and A Virgin Amongst the Living Dead (1971) to name just two). On the plus side (if you love the nudity aspect of the film making), the lead actress is incredibly stunning. This however, doth not maketh the movie!www.the-wrath-of-blog.blogspot.com
Now, if you've bought this film, or are thinking about it, then you need to know about a sub-sub genre of films called the 'Extra cheap Cannibal flick'. These films include Cannibal Terror, Cannibals, Emmanuelle and the last Cannibals, and the Devil Hunter (and by looking at listings, that Papaya, Queen of the Cannibals flick). These films, thankfully, aren't full of cheap animal killings, probably because the filmmaker couldn't even afford a packet of bacon...what you do get though it tonnes of nudity...so lets see what the Devil hunter has to offer...I'll tell you what - Al Cliver! You know him, right? He was in Zombie Flesh Eaters! and The Black Cat! and The Beyond! and the House of Clocks, and Cannibals! Well, here you see the highlight of his career, as this Italian move icon, whom belovedly described the 'spanish conquistedories' in Zombie Flesh eaters, well that guy right, the only ginger Italian to ever exist, fights a seven foot tall naked circumcised black man on a cliff And you see that big guy's balls close up! SO - does that seem worth 13 pounds to you????????????????????????????It is kinda worth it, by the way
How this flick became a video nastie is for me still an enigma. It is a Jess Franco example of how not to make a movie. I can take a lot and used to watch obscure ultra low budget but they are so bad that it becomes a good flick. But here, man, what's in a name, The title alone. Devil hunter, huh, were is the hunt on that devil. It's all about a model being kidnapped and some guys going after her on an island full of cannibals. Okay, a naked black man with red eyes pops up now and then, I guess that's the devil. The other title was Sexo Cannibal. Wrong again, there is no 'sexo' in it only some nudity. Well, some, the whole movie there is gratuitous nudity. For example, a naked girl on a boat, the two guys searching the model come aboard. The girl stays naked, and when she falls asleep one of the guys goes for a f*** with here, she doesn't have any problem with that. Let's say, every girl shows their boobies or goes full frontal. But a storyline, no way. And it clocks in over 90 minutes, too long. Boring as it is, it is still well searched due Jess Franco directing. I have seen it full uncut...there is much better out there concerning cannibals. You should see his filming of some voodoo dance. Always zooming in on pubic hair? A waist of time but due being a video nastie one to have...
I didn't expect much of the movie because of it's title, the time it came out, the title, and because it was Jess Franco's attempt to crash into the cannibal craziness.Sure, the movie offers the needed brutality and of course sleaze. At some points, the movie gets dull and tedious. For example, by the time the hot actress gets abducted in her home (while taking a shower; gratuitous nudity inserted) I was getting desperate because of the incuts showing the cannibals and hunters followed by the Director's POV and horrible but creepy music and sounds. The brutality is present but only in minimal amounts. Yikes! The cannibal leader or whatever even rips off with his teeth and later eats a woman's... oh well you should watch it.I wouldn't recommend this piece of euro trash for fanatics of quality exploitation. Sure, the plot is depraved and rough but the execution is somewhat cheesy and not well produced. At some points I wondered if the edition was just terrible or if it was an edited version.I enjoy Franco's work but this effort is just a waste of time. Watch it only if you are fan of Euro sleaze or trash cinema.
