By coincidence I had, as another viewer suggested, watched this movie late at night (or rather, early morning) on Christmas Eve. It was a strange little independent production, one about a Chicago cab driver's strange passengers in the course of one Christmas night. It somewhat reminds me of the cool cult classic, 'Night on Earth,' which is similarly about cab drivers and their passengers, except in an international focus (with each of the five stories taking place in five different cities) and emphasizing the ironic or humbling differences between the drivers and the passengers they engage in discussion with. This is somewhat similar in that respect, where the cab driver is pitted against some of the strangest passengers who's few moments in his cab generate much anecdote worthy material. There is no main plot. It is just an array of characters passing in and out of scenes and our lone constant is the somewhat frustrated cab driver. The film is a nice distraction, although viewers might find the incessant strange and overly-aggressive nature of several random passengers to be redundant or tedious. But, just like 'Night on Earth' this is probably destined for some measure of cult fame (which is already evident from the comments posted here on IMDb). The sheer outrageousness of the events and some of the conversation are likely to generate some laughs.
A filmmaker needs to decide early in the game who is going to capture her. The normal choices are short form or long form, usually described as stories about people or ideas with stories. (There's an in-between choice having to do with situations that is increasingly popular.)The first choice usually means small arcs based on characters, motivations and such. This movie, like a few others, decides to go all the way to the left of the spectrum, farther away from the long form than you usually go. I didn't count how many stories there are here: a couple dozen. They are not stories, but story fragments: a woman has just been raped, an irate customer is just about to kill a dishonest salesman, a woman has just been seduced. That's one trick: that we don't see many stories that are complete, most are story fragments that drift through. It is all about defying the laws of storytelling, so naturally we have lawyers drift through as well. The fold is that we watch the watcher, the cab driver. That brings us into the thing closer. Also, almost none of the stories are conveyed visually, instead they are told. The telling of a story coming from a story is the other side of watching the watcher and brings the story closer to us.Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.
What an Exellent Film.Paul dillon was exellent. This Film is one of my favourite films.I spent 70 English pounds,on getting one of the origional promo posters, thats how much i like it.Alot different than all the junk that comes out of hollywood, and alot better.Watch it!
Great movie, great well-developed characters...honest and interesting. I only wish I could write something this subtle, yet emotive. Gives the feel of a really good documentary, but then real life isn't this engaging. Amazing cast of characters...look for a cameo by John Cusack.
