Not a quote to quote, not any metaphor or joke to crack. But surely this movie is one of the greats. I got so into it that It seemed like time stood still the whole time. Mert Turak you killed it man.
First, let me list what I liked about this film. The setting is beautiful. Stark natural beauty of mountainous Eastern Turkey is breathtaking. Cinematography is also top notch. Local costumes, especially of the women are colorful, authentic and gorgeous. The subject matter, a city-bred grade school teacher is assigned to a remote mountain village where he assumes the self assigned task of rehabilitating a local spastic young man, has the potential of being developed into a powerful story. However, that is where my disappointment starts. The film blows the chance of being a masterpiece. The story development is choppy and full of unlikely events. At several points, I found myself asking 'but, why?' or 'how come?' and finding no explanation. The 'miracle' that is revealed at the end of the movie is probably the one plot element that is least believable. When the villagers wonder how the 'miracle' came about, the main character's explanation, 'I fell in love with my wife', just does not cut it. I admire the young Turkish director, Mahsun Kirmizigul, due to his productivity and improvement in his directing skills he has mustered over the years. Never the less, I believe he still has quite a distance to cover in order to perfect his artistry in story telling.
I am the strict follower of Turkish and world cinema. In this film characters which are conducted their roles were chosed well. Especially main character Aziz, who is a disabled person , played great his role. In scenario there are some problems about spreading events to time. For example disabled character Aziz, turning back without disabilities to his village in seven years. It can be possible but it must spread in time when he educated by idealist teacher "Muallim". My other critic will be about prediction the next step of the film. Some scenes was not surprised to me as an audience. Generally film was a superB for Turkish cinema because of photograpy of scenes, sounds, characters, they were selected and thought very well. Congratulations to Mahsun KIRMIZIGUL for successful direction.
First of all, really good picture with all the nice scenery from the hills of Turkey, but hey, thats not enough to make a movie a good one, one that evolves around a certain story with deep analysis and natural development! The movie tells the story of Aziz, a handicapped man, who is unconditionally loved by the fellow villagers. The audience just couldn't sympathize with the dude! The teacher who is sent to the village by the government is another failure, a man with "all the good intentions in the world". It just felt so fake and unreal. At the end of the movie, it felt like Kirmizigul "again" asked us to cry, but come on now, this just didn't work with me since I was busy praying the pain would end as soon as possible. Oh my God! Such a waste of time!
