Sunshine Cleaners tells the story about two sisters, Norah and Rose. These two couldn't be anymore different from the sun and moon. Rose is a responsible parent, while Norah is lazy, and can't keep a job to save ( or support) her own life. When Roses son, Oscar, is required to take medication drugs for his impulsive behavior, ( why is licking a crime?), Rose takes him out of school, refusing to cooperate with the school and put her son on any type of drug whatsoever. Oscars grandpa argues that there's nothing wrong with him, that he's smart as a whip. In order to put Oscar into private school, Rose wants to start an odd business called Sunshine Cleaners. With the aid of Mac, the married man that she's boning on the side, he uses his connections to get everything the girls need to get started on their new business. Sunshine Cleaners aren't any ordinary cleaners. These gals are going to be cleaning...blood and gore after deaths, suicides, etc. Rose is going to work with Norah, which is going to be more of a challenge then an asset, since Norah is about as irresponsible as they come. Nevertheless, they start making money, despite their differences. Problems arise. They need to get over their squeamishness, for starters. The two sisters don't see eye to eye with the scenes they clean up. Rose has an emotional attachment to each scene, while Norah just sees it as a job. Meanwhile, Oscar is helping to make his own money via the help of grandpa and his shrimp business. ( He loves this little guy, he thinks he's special.) Complications arise in ways that neither one of them imagined possible. At the core of it all, this is a story about a dysfunctional family trying to make amends, and keep it "all" together through thick and thin. It's going to be a bumpy ride! Sunshine Cleaners may win you over instantly, while others may see it as a slow, boring film. If you've made it past the 40 minute mark, you should be drawn in to every ones lives, making this is a simple, fun watch. It's not laugh out loud comedy, but it will make you smile, and somehow, even though it's not always a pleasant sight to see blood on the walls, floors, or ceiling, this movie will still give you a nice warm feeling inside. Pulled off brilliantly. All in all, I thought this was an excellent movie, although this is going to one of those "mixed" reviews movies, since everyone will have their own take on it. It's a unique, joyful roller-coaster ride, so just buckle up, and enjoy the ride with them.
This is such a heartwarming story! If you are into comedy, drama, quirkiness or even dark comedy, this is your movie! Blunt and Adams capture what its like to be a true pair of sisters. Everyone has been in Adam's shoes and she makes you feel so at home. I really feel for Blunt's character because she never really got to know her mother at all. Arkin and the little boy are also a great pair! They bounce off of each-other so well. This film gives all us out there hope. It lets us know that others fail to but we really just need to make the best of the situation. Gives us hope. Perfect mother daughter movie. Its so nice to see both actresses earlier work. They are where they are for a reason.
Sunshine Cleaning develops a "slice of life" script typical of the indie scene, quite enjoyable, carried by a very good cast with an Adam-Blunt duo that works and an always extra energized Alan Arkin. As for the direction, pretty simple, it didn't fall into the cliché of the indie scene which is always good to point out.Despite everything, the movie seems to lack ambition: the plot is rather classic and the stakes are not enough defined and developed to expect convincing the viewer entirely. The characters aren't totally exploited either such as Joe (the father) or Oscar (the son). The ending is particularly abrupt and expeditious as if the writer didn't know where to go even though a lot of questions are left unanswered.
Honestly, I saw this one just because Amy Adams and now, I can swear she was good as always. The others too. All of them acted good and controlled. But believe me, a real film, needs something more than acting and directing. A real film have to have a good message. A real life in it and a purpose. When you see this movie through the window of your own life, you could probably say I am blessed, I am happy, or maybe on the other side, I am sad, I am poor and I am a looser! You know this film wants you to make your life better. The story, shows you the efforts that someone, in a very honorable way does to make her life better. Then, at the moment, you have the strength to do something like that. You may even make a decision right then. But, in the film, we see everything so screwed out and all the efforts ends bad. Actually, plot is trying to tell you that anybody in the world can make its life better, until sometime it is good. But at some point, everything is screwed, film took its message back and it's really bad. Then again, until the ending, you think "Why should I make an effort when everything is against me?" and like you know life is empty, you have the strength for getting yourself killed! Suicide! The worst thing ever! The fact that I hate so much. What is that film? Is it worked out whit its message or at some point gets totally against itself and encourages you to do the by-yourself-stuff? I'm sorry but I can't call such film a "good" or "wort watching" one, even though I'm a huge fan of Amy Adams. When you see it through the window of characters lives, this time it sucks! You can't imagine how unbelievable is this film. I mean, Rose is sleeping with the police guy, and have a bastard boy, and her mother had committed suicide and now she wants a honorable and valid way of life? Isn't it a big contrast? Yes it is. How can I believe such a antithetic character? And when you think about it, you can not go through story and this time it doesn't work out for you.By the way, there is some particular scenes that you can not understand. What is advantage of boys radio talking scene? What is the advantage of shrimp selling dad scene? What is the advantage of Winston? What is the advantage of dead mother? OH ... I know this one! "You just put your audience in a bad mood to think about that death and awaits him for a while for a conclusion!" But it doesn't work out as well.I cant offer this film, it is not a black comedy, not a melodrama or something like that. It's a game of scenes that sometime make you laugh, sometime make you think, and sometime make you cry ... but all these are faked and at the end, you don't know why? I can only recommend it to you, if you are a huge fan of Amy Adams or Emily Blunt.
