I enjoyed the old Dad's Army series but was never a die hard fan of it.The new film is pleasant and full of great actors but I only laughed once (near the end of the film) and found it rather disappointing. The new actors did a good job of reprising the characters except for Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring didn't work. The one exception was Annette Crosbie and Julia Foster who looked like they had a great time making the film and made the most of their tiny presence of screen. However the other actors were largely wasted by average (and unfunny) dialogue and a dull interpretation of the story. Many things are best left with the originals only and that's certainly true in this case.

I wanted to like 'Dads' Army'. I really did. It features some of my favourite British character actors, and brings to the big screen one of my favourite TV shows. Unfortunately, it's awful from start to finish. The slapstick is over-done and unsubtly telegraphed, the pacing uneven (verging on the near comatose, at times), the cinematography unimaginative, and – unforgivably, given the wealth of material they had as inspiration – the script is unbearably weak. Bill Nighy and Tom Courtney look unutterably bored, and Bill Paterson barely seems to have noticed that the camera is rolling. Michael Gambon and Toby Jones are clearly trying to make the best of a bad job, but they are aping the characterisations and physical mannerisms of Ridley and Lowe...and I expect better - MUCH better - from actors of their calibre. Awful. If they upped the pace and spent less time trying to add needless detail to the characters' back-stories (did we, for example, really NEED to see the good Captain's wife? – she had much more comic worth as an off-screen gorgon!) it might have been bearable. It isn't.Stupid boys!

This is a film version of a famous and funny TV series of the same name. In the last war the home guard consisted of mainly older men protecting Britain's shores: the series and now this movie portrays their comical adventures.Unfortunately most of the characters in the movie version are inferior clones of the series. The making of this movie seems to have been rushed. A script that is mostly poor and unfunny and I could not wait for the picture to end.In the TV series what made it so amusing was the strong interplay between the main male players. The lead actors wife was talked about but never seen nor were female recruits visible if at all. The film makers have ruined the picture by failing to give us a picture that does justice to the original series.2 and a half, rounded up =3/10

I am not a die hard fan of the original series but when I have watched episodes over the years they have always raised a chuckle. But when I heard about the film version and saw the cast involved my interest was peaked, only to be dampened again by the poor reception from critics. With this in mind I held off watching Dad's Army until today when I attended a showing at the local town hall. Upon my arrival I realised I was the second youngest person in the room but it was good to see the venue full and from what I witnessed not one member of the audience was disappointed... Not one!As the film progressed and we were introduced to new versions of old favourites it was good to hear myself laughing along with the audience and that laughter came at regular intervals throughout the entire feature. The actors gave fantastic representations of the characters and the humour was kept at a level suited to the time period. The story was simple but pleasant and flowed along at a steady pace, carefully delivering visual and vocal gags a plenty.I enjoyed every minute of this one and I would happily sit down and watch it again and again... A great job by all involved.
