Having watched and enjoyed the room for all its cringey glory, I was curious to see what the disaster artist had to offer. It seems that's James franco performances are normally hit or miss and this is definitely a hit. He truly carries the film along side his brother with James immersing himself in the character of Wiseau. I like how the movie focused on developing him as a character rather than just a caricature of himself. Admittedly, I doubt know much of the character that David Franco played, but his character seemed very flat and simply a spectator in the story. The only major gripe I had about the movie was that the ending was very corny and out of place. Knowing that the initial reaction to a film of this quality would be confusion and disappointment, it seemed out of place for all the audience to start laughing. It seemed like a very rushed and sudden ending that may be a sign of an inexperienced Franco directing.
The focus of the film is a bizarre character portrayed by James Franco. (Good performance by the way, James) All the character's strange traits take our attention, but don't do anything for this film. Backstory, a mystery. Motives, hard to say. Every aspect of the plot could have been done with a normal character, which leaves me wondering what the point was. Maybe with a normal character, I could have focused on the story & given this film some better appreciation.
The Disaster Artist has been quite hyped up and praised among critics during its released, During these type of films, the art of these films is how continued and consistent they are into true based story. Having low expectations and seeing the Room for the first time a few years back, memory of the film wasn't too vapid. The Disaster Artist truly does live up to the hype as a film which is generally funny throughout and inspires a true developing message. The high praise for James Franco is worthy as he steals his scenes as he delivers one ofhis better performances acting comparible to Tommy Wiseau in the film. Many scenes in the film are funny in an unintentional way due to the delivery of Franco, as well as the chemistry between him and broth Dave Franco. It's quite a shame this film did not receive as much Oscar awards as well as money at the box office office. Though with a small budget of $10, the Disaster Artist went on to make slightly under $30 million worldwide. Overall, the Disaster Artist lives up to the hype and is a generational film. Well done to the entire cast.
A story that had to be told. I applaud Franco for doing this. He was ok in this role and I think he really adored playing this character but it was tough to play it and while he obviously has the skill and won for his portrayal I would have loved to see the actual character play himself. Some of the accent was off and seemed amateur at times. The make up was great but Franco didn't come off as believable all the time. But this movie was really well done on so many levels. These so called weirdos who show up in Hollywood inadvertently serve a purpose not for everyone but there are people who get this unrequited dream and the necessity to live it in denial as an equal alternative to accepting you don't or shouldn't be wasting your time. He certainly wasted a lot of money.
