The wigs were very distracting. Fake fur on shoes, bags, blankets and clothing were very noticeable. Some scenes were good even with low budget. If you ignore the side characters, the four main characters including the only female had decent acting skills. The plot is simple and not overly complicated and is a well-worn but good story-line about the good defeating the bad despite many setbacks. The cinematography shots were done well despite the use of poor filters in a location that does not resemble Norway in summertime. They did the best they could without real snow. I loved the scene with the dead souls and its use of real humans instead of CG duplicated humans.Raw edged (not in good way) but authentic. Could have been a Hollywood blockbuster if there were more attention paid to details.
I was just commenting the other day, what the world really needs is a faux-Viking saga starring Dominic Purcell, a ballet dancer, and an oriental martial arts fighter. Eirick (Purcell) has been brought back from the dead by the goddess Freya (Tegan Moss). He is tasked by Frey (Jesse Moss) to travel to Hellheim to get a horn so he can defeat the evil Thor (Conan Stevens), sorry Avenger fans. Thor wields a huge molded plastic ax while wearing Emo dyed red hair speaking with a voice enhancer. Oh yes, he also hates Jesus, a plot point which made the film more inane. The film is about Eirick's quest which includes companions in this "Middle Earth Period". Some of the people speak modern English, while others prefer bad Renaissance English. Some fighters are endowed with anti-gravity fighting ability, other are less fortunate. There is also a Druid Priest who subs as a wizard (Patrick Murray) an oriental fighter (Jon Foo) and a ballet dancer (Natassia Malthe) who join the quest. Druids, Vikings: they're both old and lived somewhere in Europe, who would know they weren't the same especially after having a guy speaking Chinese. Our hairy Druid wizard has a walking stick with the large proverbial crystal on the end.The set was overly CG. I can't imagine how fake this would look in Blu-Ray. For a serious viewer, I would recommend watching this film on an analog TV to blur the fake looking CG effects. For those who watch for the cheese, digital is just fine especially that big monster head thing. The dialog and speeches given in the film closely resemble those of other famous films, particularly LOTR.The film is Asylum/ SyFy bad. But for those of us who like horrible anachronistic films, this one is worth a peek.Parental Guide: Viking F-bombs. Sex, side breast nudity. 10 stars for the cheese.
I know it is labeled fantasy, but nevertheless, I would expect a certain degree of authenticity. On the positive side - The county I live in (Trøndelag) and my city of birth (Trondheim) is mentioned. I noticed some of the archers were carrying their arrows in hand, that would be the way it was done, at least while fighting. The plot and dialogue is not terrible. On the negative side - Just about everything else. Costumes, weaponry, props, SFX. As an example: The hero use a sword type that would come into play 3-4 century's after the era of the viking. Other weapons are just fantasy props. To be honest, is this one of those movies you don't know whether it is supposed to be a parody or taken "seriously"One reviewer told kids to grow up...I am 42 years old, and I enjoy a GOOD film in any genre. This was not one of them.
A Lot of posters here are giving the Thumbs down for 'cheesiness' or 'Not as Good' or 'Wasted effort'...but negative reviews because something didn't knock you off your feet in the first 10 minutes is easy.One-- This ain't a Hollywood production...but the creators put effort into the story, the set, and the action. The fight/battle scenes were actually very well choreographed and never looked 'hokey'. You can actually see the swords cutting open wounds. And remember, this is Live Action...everything isn't Anime, after all! Two-- This isn't a Movie out of the Christian Ethos, which makes this stand out when you see it for what it is, a story set in ANOTHER Mythic circle, that of the Norse Gods. It's done in the same vein as that classic 'Jason and the Argonauts'-- so the story is being told in the manner of a Mythic Tale or 'Epic Fable'. There's a little 'stiffness' involved in the dialogue and the characterizations, but it doesn't go into 'stupid' or 'cheap'.Three-- The special effects aren't in the range of the Multi-million dollar Hollywood productions...but what they managed was in character and fitting to the story. I especially like the 'Hel' sequence. All in all, This is a Good, Entertaining fantasy movie of decent length in the 'Epic Quest' category. An extra star for the respectful treatment it gives us of the Norse Mythic Ethos.Weirdly enough, this movie is best for a nice, quiet Sunday Night.
