I can't believe anyone would consider this a good film. The plot essentially suggests that human trafficking is really a negotiable proposition for young women, and once one gets over a rough patch or two, criminal bondage can even lead to companionship and love. How utterly preposterous, as well as demeaning to victims of human trafficking around the world! The lead character is viciously violent, but the director wants us to know he's also kinda "cool", and that under his monstrous violence, (largely directed at women), there's really a heart of gold. There are many ludicrous Asian films which want viewers to believe that there is something good inside every serial criminal, an idea that Scosese thankfully disabused film noir fans of in Goodfellows. Male bonding is a common theme in Korean gangster films, but this movie eschews that route and tries to make the viewers believe love is possible between a violent sociopath and a young virgin female who has been forced by him into prostitution. It is neither believable nor alluring, save for the prurient interest to voyeurs.
a truly poetic film, with all it's subtleties. This film is made in true Kim Ki Duk fashion, with controversial themes. some may wonder what the true purpose and message of this film is, and i can say it may only truly appeal to an art-house audience. This film is not a chick flick and i would recommend it to the audience more appreciative of hidden layers in a film. 'Bad Guy' deals with the complexity of the human nature, and this film reminds me of how primitive human society really is. in my eyes, it is a great film. a good late night watch before bed for me. the ending may be confusing to some people, and the movie as a whole may not make sense but please remember the overall situation in the film does happen in real life, quite often(prostitution).
I love foreign language movies, no matter where in the world they come from. I am especially drawn to Japanese Horror, Korean Drama and the South American Gangster genre. This movie is a South Korean Drama and it would have its critics in the Western World.Bad Guy is really about a guy who is not all bad and a girl who is kidnapped because she can't pay a money lender and is put on the game to suffer her retribution. The movie starts as a fairy story of a posh girl and her geek boyfriend meeting up. It quickly undergoes a dark twist before the girl is basically thrust upon the red light district and is basically raped into submission by passing punters.Probably the most unlikely part of the movie is when the girl actually falls for the leader of the hoods that put her on the street in the first place, a la Straw Dogs (a bit). She even stays on the game for him at the end of the movie, one would guess, to enable them to eat and travel...I feel this is an absorbing movie and is definitely worth a watch for those who have just under two hours to use. One could do worse than Bad Guy. I am left a little aghast at the twists and turns in the flick but overall, it is a good film with a sound plot - Which is not always the case with Korean Movies...
It was one of those DVDs I bought out of curiosity, being it on sale and being me interested in Korean films. However, I had no special expectations to it. Before I knew of it, I was completely absorbed by the story and the persons. Very few words, the few spoken in Korean so I do not even understand them, but this was compensated by the very intensive and expressive performance of the actors. I love the way the film has moments of total immobility, like the intervals of classical music, giving life and depth to the scenes, and allowing you to feel a connection to the individuals and what is happening inside them. Even when there is action, you never get a feeling of hurrying, there is always an element of space in time, giving place to both a story and the people part of it.
