It seems to me that quite a lot of people really dislike this film, when in reality, it's not very warranted. Oh sure, it's very weird, sexual, very "artsy" in the way you know will annoy a quite large number of people. I found it fascinating, though. I found it unpredictable and fun (until the pretty heavy final 15 minutes) and most importantly, I was able to see the glorious, best- actress-alive Tilda Swinton in a very different sort of role, a sort of role that I had never seen her do before but which she nails. She's very seductive and cold here, very unlikable and Swinton manages to make it all work gloriously, along with an impressive Amy Madigan as the most important secondary character.
Tilda Swinton chooses films that at first may strike the viewer as facile in their willingness to experiment with the role of the actor. Consider the title character dully staring directly out from the frame for much of 'Orlando'. I myself felt much initial impatience there, but after some time passed I could see a larger context. (See the classic Laura Mulvey article.) 'Female Perversions' might be guilty of cutesy irony or even some bathos, but its heart is solid gold. Women leaving the film after viewing it in Seattle circled around the U District, running into each other again & again, unwilling to leave the residue of truth-telling that remained as long as we let it, it seemed. Do females need sympathizers such as Flaubert surely was? We can probably get along without them but it's nice to have a friend on the other side of the gender construct. FP is a little funny, a little sad, one version of the real (and therefore legit). It might make us squirm in its sincerity. Can you handle it?
A great cast. Tilda Swinton is a huge film star. Her presence is amazing, and is perfect in the role as the protagonist of this film. Walk into the world of Louise Kaplan and the film director, Susan Streitfeld and be entertained. The camera work is great, the art direction too is wonderful. It is a mind/intellectual fantasy. Step into the world of these film makers and relax. It is strange and beautiful, thoughtful and provocative. Unfortunately, the film is no longer available on DVD....I hope it will soon be re-released. It is worth it. Give the film a chance. It deserves it. There are beautiful moments of cinematographic magic! And the acting is great. Thank you for this film....
I just watched this film on TV. No all of it. I didn't catch the beginning. But, I am still shaking. Low budget, feminism, exacerbated sexuality, irony. Remember the scene were the governor says something about his children? I think that is a clue there. Maybe the old values of family are praised here, in a glimpse. Maybe the sincerity is not neglected. This film is not a feminist lecture. But it have all the points of view inside. It is like a chamber with mirrors where an object reflects different in every of them.I give this film a well deserved 9 of 10. Very good.
