All I can (and all I need) to say is this is well worth watching. I'd avoided it since it came out on DVD simply because of the the front cover. Turns out that is just poor marketing. The film is a traditional zombie film in many ways (unlike the superb Maggie) but it is so much more because it avoids the stereotype story-line while sticking to the genre-standard zombies.I loved it because of the twist in the story-line - it's not a twist-in- the-tail, it's a whole new take on how the story could go. The acting, direction and photography are all pretty much top notch too which surprised me as I though it was a budget potboiler (because of the DVD cover as mentioned before).

When I started watching Wyrmwood I expected a trashy splatter movie. Which I am not a fan of, but the high rating made me curious. I was in for a good surprise. If you can get past the first few minutes without stopping the movie, you will discover that behind the occasionally gory and rather cheap violence it hides an interesting story, likable characters (even the villains) and some really good acting.I've seen "blockbusters" with more shallow characters than this small 160k $ project. The story features elements of both comedy and horror, reminding me of "The Evil Dead" a bit, but it has its serious moments too.I read that it's the first movie from Director Roache-Turner and I hope to see more like that in the future. Wyrmwood proves that a movie doesn't have to cost a fortune to keep up with famous competitors.

"Oh sh*t, he wasn't a zombie? No he f*cking wasn't! Is he alright? Is he OK? His head is f*cked!"Are you sick of zombie movies? That's understandable when you look at the amount of zombie movies that flooded the horror landscape recent years. There were some excellent movies that tried to handle the subject in a creative way like "Maggie", "World War Z" and "Dead Within". But most of what I've seen however, was plain bad and not really innovative. Instead those movies transformed me in a zombie-like appearance while watching at the screen in an empathic way. "Buck Wild" is an example of this. Is "Wyrmwood" groundbreaking? Nope. Is "Wyrmwood" different than other zombie films? No, actually not. Is it more shocking than other movies with those flesh-eating, bloodthirsty undead? No. The million-dollar question is : Is it worthwhile to watch it? And my resounding and enthusiastic answer to that is "YES". It's not as if this sub-genre is reinvented here, but this is a splatter film of the first rank. A roller-coaster through zombie land full of unrestrained gory scenes, ruthless massacres and with sometimes absurd and tasteful humorous contributions. All this taking place in the bushes of Australia: That's why it feels like a version of "Mad Max" mixed with the "over the top" absurd, madcap humor of "Evil Dead 2". From the first second I knew this was going to be a storm flood of flying limbs and helpless victims brutally butchered by blood-soaked, slow moving creatures. The group of men who tried to drag a jeep inside at the beginning dressed as post apocalyptic warriors, looked as if they had played in "Mad Max: Fury Road". And the horde of zombies looked frightening (I was about to say "lifelike").The part in Brooke's (Bianca Bradey) workshop wasn't so great, but from then on it only got better. Brooke is the sister of Barry (Jay Gallagher), who, after killing his turned wife and daughter in an inhuman way, is on a mission to rescue and save his sister out of the hands of a crazy scientist. Expect a splatter-fest of exploding zombie heads and unabashedly tearing apart of bodies. And this interspersed with absurd, hilarious moments. The zombies are highly flammable and when properly installed they can be used to drive vehicles: This was an extremely inventive approach. And the gift Brooke has in the end to make life (uh, yeah) difficult for those damn zombies, was highly entertaining. I am convinced that those who have written this script, were amazed by the fact they could come up with stuff like that. So, you are a huge fan of this type of film and you're a little bit tired of the soft, romanticized approach? You certainly can't skip this one. It has been a while since I saw such an energetic and enthusiastic homemade zombie flick. It's a low-budget movie and was made over a period of three years during the weekends. But it exudes passion. The only thing missing was a mad, bloodthirsty kangaroo. In my opinion, Australia is the new source of great horror films.More reviews here : http://bit.ly/1KIdQMT

I purchased this movie solely because it is a zombie movie, and I had no prior knowledge about what it was about or if it was any good or not. But I had good memories from the last couple of Australian zombie movies that I have watched. Now having seen "Wyrmwood", I will say that it was entertaining and a rather unique movie in its own way. It was, as the director and producer said, a mix between "Mad Max" and "Dawn of the Dead". However, while "Wyrmwood" is entertaining, it wasn't a movie that will stand out as particularly memorable amongst the movies in the zombie genre.Personally I didn't appreciate the thing about the woman being able to control the zombies. It was just too stupid in my opinion. And I am not overly much a fan of fast, agile, running zombies. The acting in "Wyrmwood" was good for a movie of this type, and that helped the movie along quite nicely. And while this is a zombie movie, then zombies and the zombie make-up is a thing that can't fail or be slacked upon. And the movie-makers didn't fail here. The zombies were abundant and had adequate make-up. And there was also a fair amount of blood and gore - for the gorehounds out there. If you enjoy zombie movies that doesn't follow the generic and arch-typical formula, then chances are that you will get a lot of enjoyment from "Wyrmwood".
