I am not a huge anime fan, as a matter of fact I have barely seen more than five of them, but this psychological thriller is as good as any film in the genre. It concerns a pop star who wishes to be an actor, but she also becomes a victim of stalking which leads to some serious consequences. The thin line between reality and hallucination are crossed and soon we are question what is real and what isn't. The material is strictly for adults and the artwork, as expected from the multimillion dollar anime business is stupendous. If you wish to get into anime watch this film.
One of the singular most original animated films I have ever seen. The story is about an ex pop idol who wants to become a filmstar. On a social level, it deals with the obsession of the Japanese industry with violence and sexual exploitation, but what captivated me most was its use of dream sequences. Dream sequences, or various variations of those, are not exactly a new theme. However, in most cases, they do not follow the dream logic to the extreme. Often they reduce to the common world rationality on some level, or tend to clearly distinguish between reality and dreams. However, for me, Kon's film grew organically into a film where the reality smoothly becomes the illusion, as the protagonist falls increasingly into a nighmarish reality. In my opinion, it would be very interesting to have an analysis of the film from the perspective of technological revolution, that analyzes the world of Satoshi Kon's imagination as a product of the tech bubble. To my distinction, the film managed to overcome a story to become existential in nature; pertaining questions on the nature of reality and the distinction between fiction and fact. At its best, it stayed on the level of some of Borges' finest fictions and evoked questions regarding nature of the 'lost' reality in our present age.
Alright, Okay, this is my second review for an animation/anime movie the first is 'Spirited Away' Okay let's talk about this film what can I say is this film is very disturbing I will not watch this movie again not because it no good no,it is an amazing anime movie this movie had a very strong sexual content(I don't want to talk about it you can watch it yourself)and also a very strong violence content it's severe! This movie make me had nightmare just thinking about it make fell uncomfortable but, this movie is superb the plot is so good. This is not a family's movie(it surely not!)there is a some mystery about the main character she is just in my opinion give me some uneasy feeling.I highly recommended this movie but, careful you will not gonna like it and be sure to be amazed you had been warned! My rating for this movie 10/10
I had love for Miyazaki's movies because of his imagination, screenplay and story. Fortunately ran into this and started watching it as another anime movie but it was a rarity. If akira is one type, then its just another side. Both are extremes. It may bot have all the regular/imaginative ingredients of an animated movie but sure can twist your mind and it is a must watch for people who loved thrillers and non- linear screenplay movies like memento, Amores Perros, Mullholand Dr. Must watch. Its just not a anime movie; much more than that. Glad I watched it. You will feel for the main character who (although it was animated) very well. Go for the original Japanese audio movie with English subs rather than English dubbed. You will have THAT feel.
