I've never written a review before, I only just rate any movies I see, but felt I should for this one so no one else gets fooled! So I've read all the reviews and as the only other 1/10 mentioned, all are fake except for the 4/10. It's funny how even after the 1/10 reviewer posted their honest review, more fake accounts were created to increase the overall score, again! So what the reviewer that also rated it 1/10 said, they took the words right out of my mouth... this film was total amateur hour and a waste of my time! This movie is really slow. The acting is very bad and looks like the actors are struggling to say their lines, except for Fernando. He starts off OK, but then just gets too into his role and over does it. The worst actor here is Sunny. Where did they find this guy anyway? Again, way to over-reacting. The background music is very dark, again, too much for a drama. I really couldn't finish this movie, it was that slow and boring. It's sad to see such fake reviews. Don't waste your time, even if you see it for free like I did, my time is more valuable!
****SPOILER AHEAD******The film opens up with a bloody "lucky" foreshadowing what's to come in this naive yet oddly relatable slightly criminal immigrant's unusual yet familiar story. It was nice to see the variety of ethnicities on screen, although I wish there was more development between Ricky and Lucky. You get the sense that Ricky is or was Lucky's protector but I would have like to seen the background a bit more. The film slows down after the first act but it really is a type of calm before the storm. About half way into the 2nd act things get "interesting" Lucky has made some stupid decisions and now he wants to get back to his "normal life" but Fernando (the villain) won't have it. The 3rd act is quite intense and things are fleshed out a bit. I really thought Lucky was gonna end up dead like Carlito in Carlito's Way (reminded me a bit of that film)****Spoiler***** but his actions surprised me and I liked the characters dark development and descent. It's a solid job from newbies. The acting, story and production held up throughout. There is some gore towards the end that made me jump in my seat. It was unexpected and thus effective. On the production front, I like the dark yet colorful tone of the film, although I'm not a big fan of the hand-held camera work, in this case it seems to be fitting with the overall theme of Lucky's disjointed life and circumstances. We are close-up and kinda of following Lucky around and there is a feeling of claustrophobia, which I would imagine illegal people might feel in today's America. Don't wanna get into politics and neither does this film, so if that's what you're expecting it's probably not for you. But definitely give it a go if you wanna go for a gritty ride in NYC with cab driver whose not afraid to take some risks for some "easy money." There is no such thing as easy money.
Writer-director Bari Kang's Lucky is a well made film with a talented cast. I grew up in the New York/New jersey area, and watching this movie depicted a taste of realness of undocumented life, as well as life for any immigrant caught up in the fight to make a living to support loved ones. If you want to experience drama and action along with an interesting story line, I highly recommend this movie.
I watched this movie a few times now. It shows how naive a person can be and what they can be pulled into doing something wrong so easily. It has an awesome story line. It is very realistic as to what people do now a days. It is worth watching. The actors are great. They all knew how to act and they played their roles exactly as they should have. Keep up the good work guys!
