This film has one of those misleading titles, kind of like the Italian film Zombie Holocaust. Both titles lead one to assume that there is going to be hordes of the living dead terrorizing a community or something and generally doing zombie stuff. In that film, you got very few zombies and they didn't really do anything much. In this one, you get like one or two zombies, but at least they do some terrorizing. However, this comes in the form of revenge rather than the living dead wanting to feast upon the flesh of the living. I saw this film on Mystery Science Theater 3000, but I am sure it has probably made the rounds on cable stations back in the day. One of those films that have one or two actors of note and a really cheap budget that mostly went to the one or two actors. The story has a man killed while protecting a young girl from two hoodlums. Flash years later and the son of that man is playing baseball and doing okay. Unfortunately, after stopping a robbery he is ran over by a gang of preppy teens that really know how to break the rules! Well, the mother has already lost her husband so she is understandably upset now that her son too, has passed away. She gets the woman that her husband helped so long ago and is a voodoo priestess to resurrect her son so that he may get his revenge on his killers! Meanwhile, a young cop struggles with the case of the teens being killed while his captain seems to know more than he is letting on! This made for a rather funny episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. When this episode first appeared, Adam West, who was in the movie, actually hosted a marathon of MST3K episodes that led up to the premier of this film on Comedy Central. Back in the day, MST3K literally put Comedy Central on the map and they used the show often to keep its viewership, kind of makes no sense that they canned it. The episode though was funny, my favorite joke being when the bat wielding zombie was chasing the blond and Servo goes, "George Romero's, Casey's at bat!" So, in the end a bad film that was notable because of Adam West's appearance and I guess Tia Carrere. Though she was kind of famous mainly because Michael Myer's was apparently obsessed with her. She was not really all that good at acting, your basic horror level talent and she was an absolutely dreadful singer. She probably would have done good in adult films though. The zombie effects, what little there were, were done okay as they did manage a good effect at the end with the zombie melting. And despite what Mike and the bots thought, Motorhead's Ace of Spades is an awesome song and one hell of a way to kick off a movie. It was my favorite part!
When the film begins, a father is stabbed to death trying to save a young lady from being raped. Years later, the man's son is hit by a bunch of jerks in a Mercedes and his angry mother gets the local voodoo priestess to resurrect her son in order to exact revenge on his killers."Zombie Nightmare" is a very bad movie. However, it's not nearly bad enough to be the third lowest rated film on all of IMDb. Like so many films on IMDb's Bottom 100 list, it was spoofed on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and because of this it's rated so low. I assume most of the folks who scored this one a 1 never saw the actual film--just the MST3000 version. Other films unfairly on the list are such bad but not that bad movies like "The Girl With Gold Boots" and "Mitchell". So don't believe the hype--it's just not 100% horrible--just 98.7% bad!I was excited to see that this film stars Adam West and Jon Mikl Thor. Thor is also the guy who played the lead in the terrible "Rock 'n Roll Nightmare"--and like in that film, he and his bad provide some of the music for this movie. And, speaking of music, that's the ONLY good thing about the film--the hard rock tunes are pretty decent. However, the bad very, very easily outweighs the good. The acting (especially by Molly Mekembe and Jim) is just pathetic--and who, exactly, was the coroner trying to imitate?! The zombie is hilarious, as it's supposed to be Tony (Jon Mikl Thor) but has completely different color and length hair! I suppose that in this bizarre town, zombies go to the hair salon before going on their rampage! The directing and editing are also terrible--such as when you see the dead guy in the pool moving his arms back and forth. Hey, hello...he's DEAD so why is he still moving?! Overall, this is a terrible film--don't misunderstand me about this. But there are hundreds of movies that are worse--much worse. The music alone is reason to give the film a 2 instead of a 1. Still, this one is bad enough that it does make for fun viewing by bad movie junkies as its full of unintended laughs.
There are two types of zombie movies; the undead plague over running the world zombie movie, and the dead person turned into a zombie by voodoo priests and taking revenge zombie movie. I am not a big fan of the latter type, unfortunately Zombie Nightmare falls into this category. Bias aside, I think this is a pretty OK film, and by OK I mean, very mediocre, but it doesn't deserve the low score it has.The plot is a bit silly, considering that a) there is a local neighborhood voodoo priestess, and b), when the hero is run over, his mother doesn't even attempt to call an ambulance, but goes directly to her local voodoo priestess demanding she turned her son into a zombie for revenge. Other than that, I find the pacing rather poor, lots of film wasted on non essential scenes, and (perhaps as a result of MST3K editing) a bit disjointed, a lot of scenes end kind of abruptly, and jump to another one with very little connection between the two. There is also a kind of all pervading feeling of cheesiness about the whole movie. Except for that, the movie would be, well watchable, but the bad pacing, disjointed plot, and overall silliness draws it down to just above bad.
O.K., I have been accused of rating too many films with 9-10 stars, but that is because whenever I rate one lower, people (most likely those associated with the film) mark my reviews as unhelpful. So, here is an opportunity for me to rate one as low without fear of retaliatory acts, as this film, even the makers must admit, deserves no stars other than one star for the one star in the film, Adam West. This movie shows just how horrible low budget productions were from the 80's, but they were even worse in the 70's.I didn't like watching these movies in recent years, but my eldest son told me to watch them as comedic, rather than as horror/sci-Fi movies. In doing so, I derived great pleasure at watching these low-budget horror films from yesteryear. When I was younger, during the 70's, I used to watch Creature Double-Feature on my small black & white TV, which was on a UHF channel each weekend, and aired two low budget horror or Sci-Fi films of this nature. That was the best we had back then. When movies came out like Star Wars, which might seem cheap now - the first one anyway, and Jurassic Park, they revolutionized movies. Dinosaurs never looked real, fight scenes always looked fake, but we used our imaginations more. It was more realistic looking than the frequent plays/musicals we attended.I won't provide a synopsis, nor any input about the values of this film, as every aspect of it was pitiful. Never-the-less, it is enjoyable to watch especially now in this day and age when films look so lifelike. We have come a long way, and one only need to watch a film like this to realize that. So, watch this film, if you can find an old VHS with it on it like I did, or some similar movies from this error, and just enjoy poking fun at how ridiculous everything looks. In the case of this film, the writing was also terrible - with lines that you are unable to watch without wondering if it was meant as satire.
