Brilliant film. One adults and children can see and enjoy. Dramedy at it's best. Not heavy handed about the larger themes. Music is just fantastic, sly and recalls famous westerns, but not intrusively. The color of the film looks like the period too. 1970's Belfast. The whole thing is done very well. I had trouble understanding the Northern Ireland thick accents at first -then just went along for the ride. The kids were so believable and the adults especially Julie Walters, Cirain Hinds and Susan Lynch worked with the kids, they seemed like real parents. Why didn't we get to see this in the U.S.? Accents? Saw this in UK and waited for it to come to US. Anyone know where I can get a copy?
This is simply a quite brilliant piece of work from all aspects. Each member of the cast adds to the enjoyment of this journey with the two young boys. The whole range of your emotions will be experienced as the boys take you back to the dark place that was Northern Ireland in the 1970's. Definitely a film I shall watch again and again. The realism of the times is eloquently underplayed yet adds much to the film. All the supporting actors give extremely well balanced performances which help you to engage with the extraordinary tale. Camera work is well constructed and accompanied by good background music and audio. Even the background narrative adds to the experience.
The world could be much better and easier if the children were heard or if they could speak more. The real world problems and boring routine are fantasy and dream for the kids. Mickybo and JonJo are two of these young beings who simply don't see the things the way we adults too. They love cinema and have a special passion for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. After watching their heroes at the movie theatre they see daily life as a scenery for the adventures they create on their fresh minds. They live in Belfast, a beautiful city that is unfortunately terrorized by bombs and religious division. They live on opposite sites of the place, but the imagination and sense of adventure they share make their friendship develop fast. This is a nice film that makes us see the hard reality through the eyes of these kids who do their best to make their dreams come true. We learn a lesson out of it: we should never stop dreaming.
I'm sure most people would agree with me its more about the catholics rather than the protestants and its not right. although it is a really class film i just thought more protestant stuff should have been included like bands and how the catholics react etc. its is more of a film for catholics than protestants. me as a protestant am appalled that this comment was made. Watch this movie and you will learn what it's all about to be a Catholic in Northern Ireland, it is making us protestants look bad where every1 knows we are the good side and its the catholics that make it hard for us to live a peaceful life and we just finish the riots after they started them. this was a really good film an funny but they should bring out one of the protestant community. well thats my view and most will agree.
